Of course it could not work like it did in its predecessor due to elites not being on par with one another, but it could work in a way that you control X number of elites/units - all of which have its cost. That way for example you could only have Solaria plus one squad of tactical marines, or two cheaper elites, or 1 elite plus more normal units.
Goal of this mode would be withstanding waves of enemies. It should have its own ladder, and score should be affected wether or not you used all your resource points while picking up units (less points used - better score multiplier), and how many waves you survived. I don't think it should be hard to implement without inventory/items we had in II, yet it could provide us with new interesting game mode.EDIT: It should have both solo and group ladders - defending with buddies (or randoms) could be really interesting and fun experience. Also there could be new doctrines specially made for this mode - doctrines would also cost our resource points. It will come, in one way or another. They can see 2 huge successes behind: one is the original Last Stand mode from DoW2, another is a co-op mode in Starcraft 2 (which is somewhat similar: powerful commanders fight off hordes of enemies together with escalating power through experience). It was mentioned that more people played co-op than multiplayer in Starcraft 2, it's made that good (at least when it was introduced).Last Stand will come, no doubt about it.

But they will need to add a lot to it to make it fun - just 2 fixed maps won't do nowadays, and they can be more flexible with multiple elites available.
